Demographics and ICT
March 2010

Patrick has been commissioned by DotGovLabs to undertake research into demographics and information and communication technology (ICT). The research, which will focus on the population of the UK, will look at the relationship between the use of and attitudes towards ICT and individual variables such as age, gender, education level, income and socio-economic status.
Examples of media that will be included in the study are: social networking sites, instant messaging, internet, mobile phone, and broadcast and print media.
Patrick said, “Information and communication technologies are becoming increasingly diverse and the patterns of their usage are constantly changing. In order to understand their potential and help people to get the best out of them, it is important to have an up-to-date picture of how we are using them and what for.”
Workshop on Inclusive Design
March 2010
The final program has been confirmed for the 5th Cambridge Workshop on Universal Access and Assistive Technology at which Patrick will be keynote speaker.
The event, which is organised and hosted by the University of Cambridge, will take place from 22 to 25 March 2010. It focuses on ensuring that people with disabilities have full access to products, services and the built environment and features leading international experts in this area.
Patrick said, “I am delighted to have been invited to give the keynote at this event. It is essential that people with disabilities have access to the same advantages as others in society and this workshop brings together experts who are dedicated to achieving that aim.”
Patrick is founder of Include, the world’s leading conference on accessibility, which is hosted biannually at the Royal College of Art.
Wikis in the Public Sector
March 2010
Patrick is leading research into the use of wikis as part of a government project. The project is investigating their potential as a means of engaging the public and gathering and disseminating information in a number of areas.
Wikis are websites that allow the collaborative development and editing of content by both experts and the public.
Patrick said, “The huge success of Wikipedia has highlighted the potential of wikis as a medium for sharing information. The aim of the research is to understand their advantages and disadvantages and how they can most effectively be applied in the public sector.”
UK General Election Poll Launched
March 2010
One of Patrick’s companies, WWPC Ltd., has launched a Poll of Polls for voting intentions in the 2010 UK General Election.
The Poll of Polls (PoP) averages the most recent polling figures from the following five organisations: ComRes, ICM, IPSOS-MORI, Populus and YouGov. Only polls taken within the last 2 weeks are included in the PoP, so if one or more of these organisations hasn’t published a poll within that period their figures will be excluded from the average.
An analysis of the implications for the outcome of the General Election will also be assessed. This analysis is based on a uniform voting swing across the country and does not take into account possible variations in swing within particular seats.
The PoP will be published on Twitter. It will be updated as the organisations being monitored release new figures. You can follow the latest polls here.
