Madrid Lectures

September 2008

It has been announced that Patrick will be giving two talks at the EMPACK trade show in Madrid. The first, on 5 November, will be entitled The Four Pleasures of design, while the second, on 6 November, will be Design and Emotion: Connecting with the Consumer.

Patrick says, “I am delighted that we have been able to fit in an additional talk at this event. EMPACK is one of the world’s leading packaging shows and it is always fascinating to see the latest developments in this fast moving industry.”

Each talk will cover a wide range of issues associated with design, marketing and packaging and both will be based on the Four Pleasures model of consumer requirements.

Innovation and ICT

September 2008

Patrick has recently returned from Estonia after giving a keynote speech on the subject of innovation in information and communication technology (ICT) at the Visions to Solutions conference. In his talk Patrick identified five key trends that are affecting the future of ICT: blurred boundaries between the real and virtual worlds; the time-squeezed nature of work and life; online communities; location-based services; and developments in bionic technology.

He said, “Innovations in ICT have, of course, already had a massive impact on our lives and these are set to increase into the future. As well as helping to make our lives more enjoyable and efficient ICT will become a massive influence within the medical sphere. Bionic technology looks set to have a huge impact and already workable bionic limbs and eyes have been invented. These developments offer huge potential for people with disabilities and, perhaps further into the future, enhancing our capabilities with bionic technology may become commonplace.”

Designing Services

September 2008

Next Month Patrick will be a keynote speaker at the annual Latvian Innovation Conference where he will be speaking on the subject of how to design great services.

He said, “Successful service design is not only vital to the economy, but also plays a huge role in enhancing the quality of our lives. In my talk I will be looking at all kinds of services, from traditional store-based retail to online and mobile commerce. I will also be looking at social services such as health, transport and education. It is important that we understand how to make these both engaging and relevant to people’s needs and lifestyles. The more we understand about people and their needs, the better we can serve them and the better the shape our society and economy will be in.”
