November 2008

Patrick is working with the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) to carry out research into a range of issues affecting the health of the UK population.
He said, “If we are to optimize the benefits of the health service it is vital that we have a thorough understanding of the needs of the people who use it. We need to know what people need from the service and how it can be delivered in a way that helps all of us lead healthier lives.”
The study, which is being run in various locations in the UK, looks a wide range of issues including: smoking, drinking, diet, exercise, musculoskeletal disorders and mental health.
Brand and Advertising Interview
November 2008
A transcript of Patrick’s interview with the Latvian media is now available. The interview concentrates mainly on advertising and branding, with Patrick giving his views on how to do these as effectively as possible within different markets and when aiming at different market segments.
Underlining the importance of brand, Pat is quoted as saying, “In a sense everything is connected with the brand because in the long run every action that a company takes will have an effect on its brand reputation.”

Driving Study Results In
November 2008
The results from Patrick’s global study into drivers and driving are in and are starting to be analysed. These results will form the basis for a series of presentations and papers which will be published in 2009 in collaboration with Chalmers University in Sweden.
Pat said, “This has been a very comprehensive piece of work with around 400 drivers taking part from Sweden, China and the UK. The study covers a wide range of issues, from the effect of personality on driving to the potential benefits of assistive technology in cars.”
The study also looks at issues such as how to manage workload when driving, how to achieve optimum usability for the vehicle interface and cross-cultural issues in driving safety.

Patrick’s Inclusive Design seminar at the University of Cambridge has been moved due to ongoing work commitments. It will be rescheduled for December or January. We will post the new date here as soon as it is confirmed.
Patrick said, “It is a great honour to be asked to address such a great university, especially in view of the great work that they are doing in the area of inclusive design.”
Pat is co-founder of Include, Europe’s premier conference on inclusive design to which many at the University of Cambridge are regular contributors.
All Cambridge University staff and students are welcome to attend. Others can also attend provided they contact us first to request to be put on the guest list.
