Combating Crime
June 2008

Patrick has been working with British Home Secretary Jacqui Smith as part of a program to combat crime, in particular robberies against teenagers and other young people.
Patrick said, “Many young people have become victims of robbery and often the perpetrator is after their mobile phone, mp3 player or some other portable device. Quite rightly, the UK government has been taking this issue very seriously and has asked us to look at the circumstances and causes of these crimes and to work on strategies for their reduction.”
Although overall crime has been falling throughout the UK, robberies against youngsters remains an area of particular concern as it not only involves the theft of property but also often violence against the victim.
Inclusive Design Special Session

The session will be co-hosted by Professor John Clarkson of Cambridge University who is one of the world’s leading experts in this area.
Inclusive Design is about creating products and environments that are usable by both people with disabilities and non-disabled people. It is a growing area and Patrick has made a significant contribution to the area, in particular through founding and sponsoring Include which is the world’s leading conference in this area.
He said, “Over the last few years Inclusive Design has made huge progress and has had a very beneficial effect on millions of peoples’ lives all over the world. I am very proud of the contribution that Include has made to the discipline and am delighted that the Ergonomics Society has acknowledged the importance of Inclusive Design by giving it such a prominent place in its anniversary celebrations.”
